The Columbus Area Business Hall of Fame will induct its 14th class of honorees on Tuesday, November 26th. The Chamber, along with BankFirst and Loup Power District, are proud to announce the 2019 class of inductees: Gustavus William Viergutz, Sr. and Gordon McAllister “Mac” Hull.
Gustavus W. Viergutz moved to Columbus in 1888. It was here in Columbus that Viergutz learned the carpenter’s trade and became a contractor and bridge builder until 1898.
In 1898, Viergutz was employed by a local lumber merchant, G.A. Hoagland, where he worked for 10 years. Following his work with G.A. Hoagland, Viergutz partnered with J.F. Berney to create Viergutz & Berney Lumber Co. Gustavus acquired sole ownership and the business was renamed Viergutz Lumber & Coal Co. Through the years in the lumber yard industry, Viergutz expanded his business into Platte Center and Creston.
Following his death in 1940, Viergutz’s children took over the business where it remained in the family until 1976.
Gordon McAllister “Mac” Hull moved to Columbus in 1964 when he incorporated Tasty Toppings, Inc. after purchasing the patented Dorothy Lynch salad dressing recipe from Dorothy herself. Operations for the salad dressing remained here in Columbus until 1979 when production was moved to a 65,000 square foot, state of the art plant that included an indoor swimming pool and tennis court, on the east side of Duncan.
Hull serves as President and CEO of Tasty Toppings, but this didn’t stop him from getting in a semi to haul the Dorothy Lynch Dressing to all the various warehouses between Arizona and Wisconsin.
In 1995, Hull opened Duster’s Restaurant and Brew Pub. Each year the brewery crafts 7,000 gallons of beer. The hops for production come from a Nebraska producer and the mash goes to area farmers.
Congratulations to these families!
